Why Women’s Prisons Aren’t Built for Women

When it comes to incarceration, not all prisons are created equal — especially when comparing facilities designed for men versus those meant for women. The reality is that most prison systems were originally designed with men in mind, and the needs of incarcerated women have often been treated as an afterthought.

Female prisons often lack access to adequate mental health care, trauma-informed services, and reproductive health support. Many incarcerated women are survivors of abuse, yet the system is rarely equipped to provide the specialized care and rehabilitation they need. Parenting programs, feminine hygiene products, and gender-specific vocational training are limited or poorly resourced, leaving women underprepared for life after release.

Meanwhile, male prisons tend to receive more funding, programming, and attention, reinforcing a one-size-fits-men model that fails women.

Addressing these disparities is not just about fairness — it’s about building a justice system that sees and serves the unique needs of all people, regardless of gender.
